About Learn to Skateboard Day

Learn to Skateboard Day takes place annually on May 17th, bringing communities together to introduce newcomers to skateboarding in safe, structured environments. This global initiative makes skateboarding accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background, or experience level.
From boosting confidence to building community, skateboarding changes lives! That's why Learn to Skateboard Day is so important—it creates an opportunity for anyone to discover the joy of rolling in a supportive environment.

Organized by the United States Skateboard Education Association (USSEA), this event connects certified skateboard educators with beginners nationwide to ensure positive first experiences on a skateboard.

Why Skateboarding Matters

Physical Benefits

Skateboarding develops balance, coordination, and strength while improving cardiovascular endurance through dynamic movement. It enhances proprioception and physical literacy in ways few other activities can match.

Mental Benefits

Beyond physical skills, skateboarding builds focus, problem-solving abilities, and provides effective stress relief. Research shows these mental benefits translate to academic success through improved focus and better stress management.

Social Benefits

The skateboarding community offers connection and friendship across diverse backgrounds. Events like Learn to Skateboard Day create spaces where people can connect through shared experiences.

Personal Growth

Perhaps most importantly, skateboarding builds confidence, resilience, and creativity. The progressive nature of skateboarding teaches perseverance and the value of small improvements over time.

Beginner Tips

Tip #1: Safety First

Always wear a helmet and consider protective gear like wrist guards, knee pads, and elbow pads. Safety is the foundation of fun!

Tip #2: Start Slow

Begin on a flat, smooth surface with minimal traffic. Grass or carpet can help slow your board when first getting comfortable standing on it.

Tip #3: Proper Stance

Keep your weight on your front foot when pushing. This common beginner mistake is easy to correct with proper guidance.

Tip #4: Stay Relaxed

Bend your knees and keep your body relaxed. Stiff legs make balance much more difficult.
